A successful Manager acts not only as an effective professional but also as a good person. Apart from good Job knowledge other expected qualities of a Manager are listed below.
- Attitude – Always be positive & optimistic and should have ability to change Team’s attitude also.
- Communication skills – A Manager should have effective communication skills for exchanging routine information and processing paper work. Communication skill is always helpful in Business correspondence too.
- Listening habit – A Manager should be a good listener too. Any team Member should have freedom to explain about Job difficulties but with possible solutions.

Manager should behave balanced at any level of stress and ensure that team members should not get affected. Many times Managers start shouting on Team Member and try to transfer their stress which indeed is bad quality of a Manager.
- Time Management – Every Manager should have ability to Manage Time. All important jobs to be listed on priority wise to get better results.
- Fair in dealing with Team Members – Every Manager should be impartial in his / her behaviour with Team Members.
- Ability to take work with colleagues – Apart from Team, Manager is required to have ability to take work from other departments also. That way he / she should have good cordial relations with colleagues for effective cross-functional job requirements.
- Ability to handle change Management – Change is stable. Change is a part of every job to improve work processes. Manager should handle his / her entire team with positive spirit to accept “Change”.
- CIP – “Continues Improvement plan” should be a part of Job responsibilities. Every Manager is required to encourage his / her team to make improvements in the procedures and or in any operational process. Suggestions for Improvements with respect to saving time and money should always be awarded to Motivate team Members.

- Should stand behind people in times of stress and crisis.
- Treat others the way you want to be treated.
- Praise your team in public but criticise in private.

- Training and seminars are important to learn but essential to implement in work process.
- Be approachable. Be friendly and avoid egoism.
- Celebrate “Victory” with your team.
- Use “WE” instead of “I” in your communications.
- Keep promises other wise don’t promise.
- Look at problems as opportunities and guide team members accordingly.
- Bring humour too at work place.
- Don’t burn bridges. You may have to cross again.
- Answer questions and question Answers.
- Be social, polite, humble and supportive. Avoid anger.
- Fire when necessary but only as a last resort.
- Apologise when you are wrong.
- Learn to delegate jobs.
- Cut down on Memos. Have face to face communications.
- Have courage to say “I don’t know” when you really don’t.
- Encourage informality and a relaxed company climate.
- Judge people from where they stand and not from where you stand.
- Remember that 80% of the success in any job is based on your ability to deal with people.
- You may set high goals for your team, but help to achieve them.
- Be a great mind and discuss ideas only. Avoid events and people in discussions.
- Allow your team to learn through observations and direct experience.
- Keep your team on the toes and visit on the floor for supervision and inspection.
- Maintain regularity and discipline in your department.
- Ensure that results are important than efforts and train your team members accordingly.
